On this page, you can read about other facilities your child may need. We do not help with everything. Below you can see for each topic whether or not we can help with this.
Importantly, you haven't paid anything yet. Nor that you have agreed to pay anything. If you have, then unfortunately we cannot help you.
Which we can sometimes help with:
Once a year, we provide a school supplies pass to children going to secondary school or already in secondary school. The school supplies pass carries an amount of €50. This can be spent on school supplies and gym clothes. As soon as the school supplies pass action is back, it will be posted on our website and shared in our newsletter. Only then can you apply for this.
My child is going to primary school or is already in primary school and needs school supplies and gym clothes. Can you help me with this?
No, currently there is no school stuff pass for children who are in primary school.
My child wants to take a typing course. Can you pay for this for us?
Yes, we can provide compensation for this if this course is done on the advice of a third party (e.g. school). We therefore need a statement from a third party (e.g. school) that it is important for your child to take this course. We will reimburse a maximum of 75% of the costs of the typing course.
My child(ren) have few toys. Can you buy toys for my child(ren)?
We can register your child(ren) at Het Speelkwartier if he/she does not have any toys. This is a toy bank in De Meern. After we register your child(ren), Het Speelkwartier will contact you to pick out toys.
Yes. We can apply to Children's Aid for this exam. They will assess this application. This may take several weeks. If the application is approved, they will pay for the exam for your child. It is important that you do not pay the cost yourself already.
My child has to take another exam (not NT2 exam), for which I have to pay separately. Can Leergeld Utrecht help with this?
No. We cannot help with this.
No, we do not reimburse travel costs to and from school if it is not medically necessary. If the distance to school is very long, in exceptional cases we can apply to Children's Aid for an electric bicycle.
See below if your child cannot cycle to school for medical reasons.
It is not possible for my child to cycle to secondary school for medical reasons. Can you pay the cost of public transport for us?
If it is really not possible to cycle to school for medical reasons, we can apply to Kinderhulp for reimbursement of travel costs (to and from school). They will then assess whether your child's travel costs will be reimbursed.
However, a medical certificate is needed showing that your child cannot cycle to school. You can request this from the (family) doctor treating your child.
Is your child aged 4 to 12 and does your child have a U-pas?
If so, there is now a scheme for free glasses. This is a collaboration between the U-pas and Utrecht University of Applied Sciences. You can find more information and make an appointment here: Free glasses for children | U-pas
What happens at the appointment?
Your child gets a free eye examination. Optometry students from Utrecht University of Applied Sciences conduct this examination. It takes about 90 minutes. Sometimes it is necessary to use eye drops. Your child may then have blurred vision. Bright light can be annoying. So take sunglasses with you for after the examination.
Does your child need glasses?
- Your child chooses a frame at the Hogeschool Utrecht GEZOND&WEL Centre.
- You choose an optician (glasses shop) where the glasses will be sent. (So this can be in your area and/or at an optician/ glasses shop you already know)
- The optician will let you know when you can pick up the glasses.
Your child can participate even if an eye measurement has already been carried out once. A new measurement will then take place. A child does not need to return for a check-up afterwards. A child can then go back to its own optician/glasses shop. Only if there is a medical reason, the Hogeschool Utrecht can refer the child to a specialist for a more precise examination. The family cannot then make use of the free glasses scheme.
Can't use this scheme for your child?
Does your child need glasses but you cannot use this scheme? Leergeld does not reimburse glasses. You can sometimes go through the special assistance apply for glasses from the municipality. If you have any questions about this, you can mail to financieleregelingen@utrecht.nl or contact the municipality via the general telephone number 14 030. You can also contact the nearest neighbourhood team approach.
If it did not work out via the Neighbourhood Team and special assistance, please contact us on 030 - 73 70 332 or info@leergeldutrecht.nl.
What we can't help with:
No, we do not reimburse day trips. Very occasionally we have a promotion for a day out. If so, it will be mentioned in our newsletter and on our website. Only then can you apply for this.
No, we do not reimburse mobile phones.
My child's mobile phone is broken. Can you reimburse the repair costs?
No, we do not reimburse mobile phone repair costs.
No, we do not reimburse printers. Your child can print at school or at the library, for example.
No, we do not reimburse a passport or ID card ourselves. We can apply to Children's Aid for this in exceptional cases. They will assess the application. This may take several weeks.
We do not reimburse costs for braces / orthodontics. In some cases, you can get special assistance apply to the municipality. If you have any questions about this, you can mail to financieleregelingen@utrecht.nl or contact the municipality via the general telephone number 14 030. You can also contact the nearest neighbourhood team approach.
Unfortunately, you can no longer apply for a children's party in 2025. Stichting Kinderfeestje and Leergeld Utrecht do not have enough money for this.
